Oculus Quest 2 Latest Update News

Oculus Quest 2 Latest Update News - Wireless Native PC Streaming & 120hz support and more.

The virtual reality world is moving at a very rapid pace and, with it, comes more innovation! Oculus Quest 2 is currently at the forefront of said innovation, bringing new (and easy to use) technology to the field that makes enjoying virtual reality worlds, experiences and games that much easier! The Oculus Quest 2 has just been updated to V28 and today we will take a look at the fantastic changes that come with this update and how it is going to make the use of Oculus Quest 2 that much more enjoyable and immersive!

Wireless Native PC Streaming (Air Link)

The ability to play PC VR games directly on your Oculus Quest 2 has been present for a while (via the Link cable) however, with this new V28 update, this ability is taken a step higher, all the way to the clouds (quite literally)!  While before you would need a cable to play said PC VR games on your Oculus Quest 2, with this new update, you can completely ditch the use of said cable and, instead, simply rely on the use of Air Link! Air Link is based on the same concept of being able to play those PC VR games on your Oculus Quest 2 but, wirelessly, via Wi-Fi!

Playing PC VR games on your device wirelessly was something that was already possible with a roundabout way of using the virtual desktop mode, however, with Air Link, Oculus has made it so there’s now a native way to do so, which is dedicated to making this experience as pleasant and smooth as your Wi-Fi connection allows. Naturally, there are some points to consider when using Air Link because, seeing that you will be running these games on your computer first and then transposed to image on your Oculus Quest 2, this will require a computer that is powerful enough to run VR games at a comfortable resolution and framerate. Air Link will arrive with the V28 update and it will be free!

120 Hz Support

The time has finally come where the Oculus Quest 2 users will be able to enjoy a smooth 120 Hz experience! Even though this is still an experimental feature that is just starting to be implemented and, while there are still no native games that support such a feature, it is important to understand why the 120 Hz support is such a big and innovative feature to the Oculus Quest 2. Naturally, running the Oculus Quest 2 at 120 Hz means that it will run a lot smoother, making for a much better framerate, however, it is also important to understand the cons that may come with it, in case the games are not properly optimized for such a boost.

Even though the Oculus Quest 2 is one of (if not) the best Virtual Reality headsets on the market and while it’s still quite powerful, it is no top-of-the-line computer, therefore, there are some compromises that might be required to run games at 120 Hz. Some of these compromises will be a less clear image, your headset will most likely get hotter than usual (due to the increase in power that is necessary to run it at 120 Hz) and, naturally, your battery will be drained a lot faster than previously as well!

However and, even though these cons are something to consider, it is important to know that once you try the 120 Hz experience, you will definitely feel the difference. It is also important to understand that (for now), Oculus Link will not be able to make use of the 120 Hz feature, which means that the PC VR games you stream to your Oculus Quest 2 will not be able to run at such a framerate, being locked at 90 Hz.  This is an optional feature that can be activated in the settings so, if you are looking to get the smoothest experience possible then, it is there for you to enjoy however, if you are content with what you have now and you would rather not deal with the cons of experimenting with 120 Hz, then you do not need to activate it either.

Infinite Office

In case you thought that Oculus Quest 2 couldn’t blur the line between reality and virtual reality any more than it has then, we are sorry to inform you that you were very wrong to assume such a thing! How wonderful would it be to be able to work on your computer (using your keyboard and even mouse) while looking at a beautiful backdrop that immerses you in the virtual reality realm? Well, with the V28 update, that does not have to be a fantasy anymore! With this new upcoming update, you will be able to enjoy the Infinite Office tool but, what is it exactly?

The Infinite Office tool is (pretty much) a way to work in the VR realm using your Oculus Quest 2 headset however, it goes way beyond that simple explanation. With this tool and, due to the power of the Oculus Quest 2 and its intricate design and features, you are able to use your physical keyboard and mouse, all while still having your desk represented in the headset. Yes, it literally transposes your keyboard, mouse and desk into a virtual reality realm of your choice, enabling you to work in a completely new (and exciting) virtual environment. You will be able to use the browser, type with your physical keyboard and use a wireless mouse, with a virtual representation of all these devices alongside your desk!

At the moment, the only keyboard that is supported by the Oculus Quest 2 is the Logitec K830 due to having a realistic representation of such a keyboard in the VR realm however, more and more keyboards will be supported in the feature.

Hand Tracking Update

With so many amazing updates, it is only natural that the hand tracking feature would also be getting some love! Even though this is a simple update, it is still one that will create a lot of possibilities for more immersion and fidelity in future games! The hand tracking feature has been upgraded from 30 Hz to 60 Hz, providing an overall better framerate to how you can use your hands in the VR world and, of course, more immersion!

The future of the Oculus Quest 2 just keeps getting brighter, with no signs of stopping anytime soon! We can’t wait to see where the Oculus Quest 2 takes the VR realm next and the infinite possibilities that it will bring to the VR world!
