The Meta Quest store's discovery is a mess. Most of what shows up in the free section is Gorilla Tag clones, brainrot games, and abandoned demos. Finding anything actually designed for anyone above 16 involves serious digging, and most people give up after five minutes of scrolling through garbage.

But the good stuff exists, and it's worth finding. We've done the digging for you and pulled together the free games and apps that are actually worth installing, organized by what you're actually looking for instead of whatever the algorithm is pushing this week.

Free Games for Quest

Competitive Multiplayer

Aim XR is a free multiplayer VR shooter with fast rounds, skill-based matchmaking, and straightforward gunplay. It's one of the better free FPS options on Quest if you want aim duels and competition.

Cards & Tankards is a strategy-heavy card game built for multiplayer sessions. It rewards planning over reflexes and works well for long play sessions with friends where strategy and banter matter.

Virtual Pets

Hello, Dot is a VR spin off of the popular Niantic mobile game, Peridot. Pick them up, toss them gently, dance with them, or snuggle on the couch. The arcade minigames (Dotball, Play Dates, Eating Contests) earn currency for outfits and customizations. The AI-powered customizer lets you describe what you want your Dot to look like and watches the magic happen in real-time. It's built around building an actual bond with a digital pet.

Forever Pets is a pet sanctuary for animal lovers seeking joy and connection. Adopt from a collection of unique cats and birds, hatch baby birds and watch them grow daily, and experience authentic reactions to your touch, voice, and care. Each pet has unique personalities with their own likes and dislikes. Play mini-games to boost their skills, style them with accessories, and enjoy board games with Dr. Pixel and friends as your pets curl up beside you. It's more sanctuary than simulation.

Fitness & Movement

FitXR is technically a free trial with a subscription model, but it's one of the most legit structured workout Quest has. Full-body HIIT, dance, zumba combat, and flow classes mean you're actually exercising, not just moving around. The free trial lets you test whether it's worth the subscription.

Sandbox & Creative

Little Planet is a cozy VR sandbox where you build and customize everything from scratch. Play interactive items like pianos, fireworks, and Ferris wheels. Go solo to befriend NPCs called Pals and uncover their stories, or invite friends to collaborate on creations or just dance by the campfire. The game grows with community feedback, constantly adding new features and items based on what players want.

Horror & Thriller

Horror Free is a 4-player ghost hunting game like Phasmophobia but built for VR. Hunt and exorcise demons using tools like holy water and crosses while hiding in closets and exploring mansion maps. Real-time voice chat means you can communicate as you hunt or become a ghost clue-giver when caught. Customize your appearance with earned coins and unlock modes like Hell Mode if you want extreme intensity.

Crafting Crimes is a true crime podcast for mixed reality where you don't just listen, you build. Hosted by miniaturist Carol K. Ras, legendary crime cases unfold in miniature before your eyes. Each 20-minute episode has you place walls, objects, and evidence with hand-tracking gestures to build the crime scene in your hands. Three episodes cover the Lizzie Borden murders, the Wonderland House violence in 1980s Hollywood, and the 1911 Mona Lisa theft from the Louvre. You're piecing together history's most infamous investigations at your fingertips.

Fun Co-op

Dimensional Double Shift is a co-op chaos game from the creators of Job Simulator where you run an interdimensional diner and garage with up to 4 players. Cook, weld, repair, and panic together while serving bizarre customers and dealing with ALICE, your AI manager. Travel across dimensions, tackle ridiculous jobs, and unlock corporate swag. It's marketed as teamwork optional and chaos guaranteed.

Bait! is the world's #1 VR fishing game with over 10 million players worldwide. Fish across 8 different lakes and locales for 60+ types of fish, customize your rods and reels, and play multiplayer with up to 4 friends. Beyond fishing, visit Casters' Cove, a social destination for up to 12 players where you can toss beach balls, skip stones, race RC boats, and search for treasure. It's fishing with relaxation built in.

Free Apps for Quest

Productivity & Work

Immersed turns your Quest into a productivity tool with virtual desktops and remote work setup. If you're remote and want a more immersive workspace, this is the app that makes it real.

Media & Social

Discord just launched its native Quest app, which means voice chat and communities happen directly in your headset instead of requiring a phone or using the Meta Browser. Better integration for gaming sessions and friend coordination.

Spotify gives you background music and podcasts while you do other things in VR. The native app means better integration than casting from your phone.

Relaxation & Meditation

TRIPP is a wellness app with a free 7-day trial offering guided relaxation, focus sessions, and sleep programs. The experience is built for immersion, with polished visuals and audio that actually work for calming or focusing.

Art & Creative

Gravity Sketch is a 3D design tool where you create with hand gestures at any scale. Walk around your designs at full size, apply textures and materials, use posable mannequins for context, and collaborate in real-time with others. Import images and 3D files (IGES, OBJ, FBX, etc.) for reference, and export designs to Blender for downstream work. It's built for professional teams, individuals, and hobbyists who want to bridge the gap between 2D ideas and 3D reality.

ShapesXR is a collaborative 3D prototyping tool for building XR applications and products in minutes, even without prior 3D experience. Import 2D/3D assets from your library, build with procedural primitives and brushes, add animations and interactive triggers, and scale your designs in VR or MR. It integrates with Figma for prototypes and exports directly to Unity. Real-time web collaboration with permission control and enterprise security makes it built for professional teams.

Worth Watching in 2026

Primal Rumble is a slapstick VR card battler combining strategic deck-building with chaotic multiplayer combat. Play in VR or Mixed Reality with the arena scaled to your space, from coffee table to full-room. It's fast-paced, turn-based strategy with quick rounds and meaningful choices. Win rumbles to unlock 300+ cards and discover clever combos. Each Prial moves with handcrafted slapstick humor - punching, stomping, dancing, and pulling off wildly unexpected moves that feel like collectible toys brought to life. Solo progression and up to 4-player PvP battles, with strategy and comedy in one package.

Go Play!

The free Quest ecosystem has real substance if you're willing to dig past the garbage. Competitive games that reward skill, creative tools that do actual work, fitness apps that deliver real workouts, and social experiences that keep you coming back.

Some of the best stuff (FitXR, TRIPP) requires subscription after the trial, but that's because they're genuinely good and meant for long term use. The free tiers/trials give you enough to decide whether they're worth paying for.

Start with whatever category speaks to you. Try AimXR if you want competition, Little Planet if you want Animal Crossing in VR, FitXR if you want to work out, Dimensional Double Shift if you want fun co-op chaos with friends, or Immersed if you want your Quest to be productive. The barrier to entry is gone, so there's no reason not to explore!
